India bus plunge 'leaves 45 dead'

Police in India say 45 people have been killed after a bus in which they were travelling plunged down a deep gorge.

So how many are killed each year in road crashes in the UK? I believe that the figure is about 3000 (and that is for a much lower population than India). The numbers for India have to be much higher than suggested.

The UN estimate annual road deaths are 1.1 million and is number one killer of young people aged 10 - 24 worldwide.

Found this little snippet of info -

"Citing Ward's Motor Vehicle Facts & Figures, 1999, this almanac reports that, in 1996, the most recent date covered, there were 485,954,000 cars registered worldwide, and 185,404,000 trucks and buses, for a total, worldwide, of 671,358,000 motor vehicles."
