No hydraulics or electric winches - everything had to be man handled, so keep all your fingers and other important body parts clear.

I'm not Elfin' Safety would allow even the Military to use those, today.
(Assuming they weren't obsolete, of course.)
I once saw a vehicle towed backwards, in a similar fashion to that rigid was. The steering was left free and the front end swung out and hit another vehicle, during a turn.
Surely, having it lashed is better?
