Safety Crackdown

This item is dated 27 Nov 2008 -

A week long safety crackdown on truck drivers across Europe has led to more than 600 prosecutions for drink-driving, almost 14,000 contraventions of drivers’ hours and tachograph regulations and more than 2,000 prohibitions to continue driving.

Co-ordinated by TISPOL, the European Traffic Police Network, the initiative saw police across 22 countries carrying out a wide range of safety inspections that focused on speeding, alcohol, drugs, seatbelt use, tachograph infringements, excess weight, dangerous loading and document offences. A total of 123,752 vehicles were stopped and more than 41,000 offences were reported.

Results show that around one in five of the offences detected involved a vehicle travelling outside its home country.
