In the mid 1960s, one could leave a job on a Friday and start a new one (without prior notice) on the following Monday.

I was able to choose where I worked (and who for).

By the time my son was looking for work in the mid 1990s things were different and more difficult for him (as they had been for me in the mid 1980s).

It's no fun being out of work, especially when you have a family (and a mortgage) to support. The risk of losing your home is devastating to contemplate.

Who knows how much worse things might get in the next few years (mid 2010s) or for how long things might go on getting worse?
