This is a bit of a cheek, but....

This is a bit of a cheek, but I'm getting desperate.
I have a 1951 Lanchester car fitted with a Wilson pre-select gearbox that has a problem.
I have asked on several historic car sites over the past year but no one has been able to help, so in desperation I had the bright idea of coming here, as I know some buses were fitted with similar gearboxes.
The problem is that the box won't change down from 4th to 3rd. It changes fine going up, and changes from 3rd down ok.
If anyone can shed a light on why this should be I would be eternally grateful.
Thanks in anticipation

There might be a few old timers at Cobham Bus museum that might be able to give you some advice ?

Yes I've already tried there (assuming you mean the London Bus Museum now located at Brooklands Museum). Maybe I spoke to the wrong people but no one there was able to help.

There are various companies that will still repair these transmissions if you look on the internet. The only experience I had with Wilson type boxes was many years ago when I worked on Leyland Nationals and Titan's. Unfortunately that was well over 35 years ago and I am long retired now. Since then I have either lost touch with the people that might have been able to help - or sadly they are no longer around.

Don't forget that some railway transmissions used the same gearbox. It might be worth a look at railcar.co.uk They might have/know someone.

Hope that helps.
