Of course, we are a small rural depot and the drivers probably know each other by sight - not like a city service.
Well there are several operators in Gothenburg, but the rules say that an employee from any of the operators may travel for free, if he is in uniform and shows his employee card.
This is because as long as he is in uniform he is expected to answer any question from a passenger, even if he isn't driving, therefore he is "on duty".
During free time they are not allowed to travel for free (altough a couple of years ago anyone empoyed by any operator got a free travel card (bot in Gothenburg and in Stockholm) but that time is gone.

There is controversy over the free travel offered to London Transport employees (and family).

When I was on shift it was a common practice to use a bus to go and collect any workmates from home if for any reason they did not have their own transport to get to work in. I don't know what the inspector would have made of that, plus all the other things that went on. Things such as running the wife and kids home after a days shopping. The best one was I think was using a bus to take one of the engineers and his wife to the airport when they went on holiday. Not that I would ever dream of doing such things of course, it was the others.

A similar situation could be arranged when 'testing' a truck.

Acquiring a load of gravel or paving slabs and dropping them off was all part of a realistic test . . .

Only if you get caught, a good employer who had come up through the ranks themselves knew it was often better to turn a blind eye to some of things that went on.
