Cab Noise

Remember climbing up Shap in low gear?....hanging out of the cab window for a bit of piece and quiet? Them Albions could be real noisy in the cab.

Experienced a run in a Renault 18 wheeler 8 years ago. so quiet, comfortable and powerful compared to what we used to have.

These modern day gear boxes with range changers beat the heck out of the old Eaton 2 speed Axles too!

The noisiest motor I ever drove up Shap Billy was a DKS Daf when I drove for Connollies in Ballymoney, good powerfull motor but damn noisy. All the best.

What about the old 2 stroke Commers of years back? sheer torture!

Those TS3s sounded great outside though, especially when beating up a gradient or accelerating from a stop.

I used to drive a 2 stroke commer in early 60s. think they were made by Rootes.
They had a factory in Dunstable, Beds. The body was wider than the cab.
The air-brakes were nothing but trouble, some times they were as they should be, and sometimes they took a lot longer to stop you. Had a few near misses.
Had them checked three time over two years at Rootes of Dunstable and they said
they could'nt find anything wrong with them. Other than the brakes, I did'nt find them to bad to drive.

You're right Barney,the Commer TS3 was made by Rootes.They were very "throaty" and were quite a fast wagon,very popular with wholesale market delivery merchants.very often a flame could be seen coming out of the exhaust.IIRC the cab was a walk-through type.

Cranfields the millers used to run a fleet of them as well as the thames sailing barges from ipswich dock.

heard a commer going up the road one day with a blown exhaust. Now that was noisy.

I used to thumb it home to Sheffield from Norfolk when I was in the RAF.Many a time I would get a lift as far as the (old) junction where the A17 turned off for Newark from the Lincoln road.On those cold,still,frosty nights you could hear those TS3s other side of Sleaford on their way to the Lancs and Yorks markets.Wm Epton of Boston and Rickwoods from Fakenham (I think) had some and always got a lift with them.

deckboy peggy ,yes we had them at mortans in coventry but couldnt they just fly.
