Thanks Ian and Andy, for raising, and dealing with the query.

I had thought it may be contentious, but had concluded that as the agency was a government sponsored non frofit making organisation, and if I explained the purpose of the entry, It would probably meet the criteria and also satisfy any copyright issues.

An article covering this was seen on one of those motoring TV shows a while ago and they said a lot of registrations coming up for sale at these auctions are included on these personal number plate adverts seem in magazines etc.
If you wanted a reg from one of these companies they would go to the auction, hopefully buy the plate and sell it to you at a good profit.

Nothing wrong with that mate, it is the way of that world that some people, not me, are natural entrepreneurs and will match demand with a supply, by doing the homework that most of us are too lazy to do for ourselves.

My Mate had a big turnover in this business in the sixties, when there was legislation that you had to own the donor vehicle to which the registeration belonged, to transfer the number.

As no one could keep hundreds of cars stored with interesting numbers, he would buy a car with an interesting number, and scrap it. He also had lock ups full of mopeds and cyclemaster type cycles.

He kept the car registration details in his name, including it on his national advertising.

When someone wanted to buy an interesting number, he transferred it to one of the mopeds, then sold them the moped, enabling them to then transfer it to their car.

I am pretty sure that was how it worked.

Is it true if your vehicle complete with personal reg number is invloved in an accident and the insurance company decides it's a write-off and pays out you have lost the number.
