Guernsey buses
When I was on holiday in Guernsey in 1978 they ran some very old buses that looked like they were from the 1930's. They were single deck, with a front engine, which apparently was located right next to the driver, as there was a huge hump next to his seat, which was covered in leather. It had a manual box, and the doors were opened by a strange contraption. It was a large lever which the driver simply pulled and pushed to open or close.
Anyone know what make these were? And has one been preserved anywhere? Last edited by zulu; 16th April 2011 at 13:12. Reason: spelling error |

If you have a look at the Gallery section followed by the older bus section there is a recent picture of one Albion Victors you are refering to.
Their design was the result of the bus companies (Guernsey Motors and Guernsey Railways) being taken over by the Red and White United transport, the new management were "Albion Minded" and had a soft spot for the pre-war Duple style of body, they also required a dual purpose vehicle suitable for both Tour and Bus duties. Guernsey buses had a maximum width of 7ft and Heavers followed by Readings coachbuilders were able to supply suitable bodies with a close resemblance to the Duple appearance. Several of these buses have been preserved I own number 77 If you look at Google Images you will find photos of several. Peter |
