Do
not suck directly on the metal pipe - use a good long length of clear plastic 'hose' (at least a couple of metres) with enough to allow a dip down between you and the tank. You should be able to easily suck fuel from the tank until it runs down into the hose where you can see it
before it gets anywhere near your mouth.
