I certainly remember the '
Big' part of the name, though my juvenile mind didn't understand the true meaning of the word, I kept on referring to them as Big Bedfords for a long long time (and I still think of them thus).
It must have been an effective advertising campaign for u to be discussing it all these years later.
My guess would be 1953 - but I'll check and report back . . .
