How different things are today from when you were first travelling!
Nowadays almost everybody would carry some sort of photographic apparatus (even if they didn't choose to use it).
I've taken to carrying a small digital camera in my pocket (as well as my digital SLR in my backpack whenever I am out walking). It means that I can always record events (assuming that I have time to get out the camera and switch it on of course). I still miss significant events, though.
