These numbers were used to show different variations in the various chassis types. They related to matters such as transmissions/gearboxes, width, braking and even whether the radiator was 'open' or enclosed by a 'new-look' front, whether a metal or fibreglass.

The list is rather long to go into in detail, I'm afraid. This applied to most models issued by Leyland until the BL days.
