ID Cards
The first ID cards are scheduled to be issued 25 November 2008. Within three years all foreign nationals applying to enter or remain in the UK will be required to have a card.
By 2014, 90% of foreign residents in Britain should have identity cards. The introduction of national identity cards for foreign residents will be followed by the first ID cards for British citizens, targeting workers in sensitive roles - such as airports - from 2009. Then from 2010 ID cards will be available to young people who want them. From 2011, cards will be available to the general population. |

Oh yes indeed and there is more -
From 2011, all passport applicants will also be automatically registered for ID cards when they apply for new biometric passports containing fingerprints. They will be able to choose whether to have a passport, an ID card or both. This will speed the roll-out, and could result in savings of around £1bn. http://www.homeoffice.gov.uk/about-u...plan?version=1 |

Only my thoughts here but is it possible you could travel most of Europe on an ID card but would need the passport for further afield.

ID cards for some domestic journeys?
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/arti...sle-Wight.html He added that ‘ferry journeys to the Isle of Wight or the Isle of Skye’ would be covered. Is this an April fool as you can also drive over the bridge to the Isle of Skye.
