That was always a very dangerous place to work during the run-in more - so when you had to stand at the back of the older rear engine buses to check the oil and water levels. On newer ones these could all be done at the side of the bus. I think all the L.T garages also had a fuel bay box - marked off in yellow and protected by traffic lights and an alarm. Only one bus was allowed in the box at a time - if another one started to enter then the alarm would sound to alert the person fueling the bus.
