air brakes

long before the coming of air brakes ,engine retarders, exaust brakes, etc.the scots, hauliers had the first air brake system?.their loads were that high, that if a scot,s driver got into difficulties braking.he could turn into the wind and slow down.[no silly comments please ,just a joke].

I saw 'unbelievable' loads being transported in Southern Italy.
Imagine loading a vehicle to its 'limit' then adding another load on top - then adding a few extra pieces on top of that.
The worst accident that I saw had a heavily-laden truck on its side in a ditch after running away down a hill and failing to negotiate the bend at the bottom. The scene looked as if the truck had mowed down a crowd of people - there was gore spread everywhere around - but on closer inspection it turned out to be . . .
. . . tomatoes . . .
