Leyland Terrier

2 Attachment(s)
I have just bought a Leyland Terrier and now i am wondering if there is somebody that know anything about this cars?

G-CPTN 7th May 2012 18:55

Welcome to Truck & Bus, dekkman.

All that I know is that the early ones were fitted with full-power hydraulic brakes (ie a pumped system).

I don't know whether yours will have this system.

dekkmann 7th May 2012 19:09

Thanks for that
I thing mine has that because the handbrake handel looks just like the hankbrake handel that is on modern trucks

coastie 7th May 2012 21:47

A very warm welcome from the Sunny Isle of Anglesey, Dekkmann.

It's unusual to see the headlamps in the bumper and not in the front panel.

robertdavey6 7th May 2012 21:55

Firstly a warm welcome to the forum.

Secondly, whilst I have driver 2-3 Terriers, I do not claim to know anything about the mechanicals of them.
The ones I drove had a "normal" truck type handbrake lever.
I would say, looking at the attached piccygraphs, that the front bumper is not an original. Indeed, it might not even be from a Terrier. Compare it with this http://www.truckandbusforum.com/gall...date=lastvisit
Also, I don't recall seeing that type of indicator fitted to Terriers, here, in the UK. The sidelights are similar to those that we have seen, of trucks on Malta.
Lastly, and this is only my impression, this might be an early model. Notice the difference, unser the windscreen, compared with mine.

coastie 7th May 2012 22:02

"Compare it with this http://www.truckandbusforum.com/gall...date=lastvisit"

I knew something was different about the front of the Danish Wagon.:)

G-CPTN 7th May 2012 22:21

This looks like a Leyland 'Pilot' cab version (1970 - 1975) rather than the later G-cab version (1975 - 1980).

See:- http://www.aronline.co.uk/blogs/2011...-light-trucks/
(scroll down)

I see that the Terrier name (which had been used for an 11-ton payload six-wheeler before the War) was used to designate the lighter models with the name Laird used for larger models. (?)

here is the handbrake handle

G-CPTN 8th May 2012 23:46

Your model is 750TR and chassis number 415427.

B28L/17069 will be the build code and will probably include the original colour.

It was built in April 1971 (4.71).

51VD/1508ZG/2465? is the VIN (a unique Vehicle Identification Number) which will define where it was built (and by whom) and, when.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vehicle...nts_of_the_VIN

Maybe Audiman can be more specific?

Edited to add that your vehicle was built before the VIN was standardised, and, from 1954 to 1981, there was no accepted standard for these numbers, so different manufacturers used different formats, so the above Wiki article doesn't apply!

On the ones I drove, I'm sure the handbrake valve was outboard of the driver's seat. Between it and the door. Also, the dash doesn't look familiar.

G-CPTN 9th May 2012 20:24

dekkman's Terrier is an early model based on the updated FJ 'Pilot' cab, not the G cab (which yours was).

http://i1161.photobucket.com/albums/...1/DSCF1357.jpg

1975 was the changeover, and dekkman's is 1971 vintage.

dekkmann 10th May 2012 16:30

Sounds about right to me . . .

You would find that there would be several tyre options available to the original customer, some of which would affect the permissible axle loads (up or down from standard).

Settle for what you can get hold of easily.

Best wishes with your restoration - keep us informed of your progress!

G-CPTN 25th November 2012 20:24

First place would be a breakers yard - there must be at least one near you.

http://www.nitruckdismantlers.com/

http://www.mcelvaneymotors.com/index...ond-hand-parts

http://www.commercialvehiclebreakers-ni.co.uk/

http://www.goldenpages.ie/truck-dism...nd-monaghan/1/

http://www.dafdismantlers.com/

http://www.truckparts.ie/

If you need help, try searching on eBay, or:-

http://trucks.autotrader.co.uk/servi...ts-accessories

http://www.buyyourvan.co.uk/van-part...part/handbrake

or:- http://stores.ebay.co.uk/vintagevehi...=p4634.c0.m322

You will need the Chassis number for positive identification. This might be on the doorframe.

See above:- http://www.truckandbusforum.com/arch...hp/t-4152.html

G-CPTN 25th November 2012 20:27

Old vehicles often end up being used by 'travellers', often as living vans.

If you have a site near you, ask them what they do for spares.

Louisemagill 26th November 2012 15:47

Thank you

G-CPTN 26th November 2012 16:18

Glad to be of help, Louise.

There were more addresses, but you can probably search for yourself using 'Leyland Terrier Ireland breakers'.

robertdavey6(mobile) 26th November 2012 17:53

I was wondering if, the valve from a Leyland Roadrunner might fit. It might be worth the cost of a call, to a DAF dealer, as it might give more options.

coastie 26th November 2012 17:59

Try these people, they're usually very helpful.

http://www.holyheadtrucksdaf.co.uk/

Posting shouldn't be a problem, or someone could put it on the Ferry for you, if you or someone you know lives close to Dublin.

Don't forget the international dialing code for the UK is 0044 then 1407 7721197

Louisemagill 26th November 2012 18:03

Hi.
I have an original Leyland Terrier workshop manual (Models TR650, 750, 850 and 950), but no vehicle. I am going to put it on eBay soon, but until I do, I will be pleased to have a look in it for any information anyone may want.
