GPS usage.

It has been announced that the use of 'car' GPS systems is to be banned.

Ban lorries from using car sat-navs, say councils.

Whilst it might seem to make sense, is a car system better than no system?
How will they enforce it? VOSA?

I presume that it is still legal to operate without GPS?

My current vehicle has a built in sat-nav. To start with, I used it alongside the TomTom that I'd previously used. I quickly came to realise that MOST of the time, it was very good but, NOT perfect.
For one delivery, to Macphie of Glenbervie, both systems want to use the same routing. UNDER a 12'6" bridge!! This, despite the TRUCKNAV being set to allow clearance for a 13'6" trailer!!
Fortunately, the ULTIMATE navigation system (ME and the steering wheel) override both of them and go via Drumlithie, instead.
The fault appears to be in the mapping used. It concentrates on main roads, not country lanes.

The DRIVER, not the G.P.S system controls the vehicle. For now.

They can send you on some strange routes as times, you have to keep your wits about you.

My inbuilt SATNAV has three options - Shortest, Easiest and Fastest.

The Shortest is precisely that and will route you along narrow lanes, through deep fords (suitable only for agricultural vehicles), and along 'Green Lanes' that peter out up the side of 'mountains' - not to mention gated roads.

Indeed! Another example is in Scunthorpe. If I have British Steel (as it is again) as an end point, no problem. If I have it as a way point, enroute to the quayside, it tries to take me via a 7.5t weight limit, to avoid having to turn around and back-track along Brigg Road.

A tool is only as good as the person using it!
