Driver Richard Dennis McDowell, from Stockport, said he and his colleague had seen the sign 370 yards away informing drivers the bridge was 14ft 9ins-tall but thought they would be able to pass the 15ft 9ins lorry under.
The 63-year-old, who has been driving lorries for 20 years, said: “There are signs a bit further up, but I thought I would make it.
“We were talking about the height on the trailer. Inside it says 15ft 9ins. I said ‘this is not 15ft 9ins’.
“We thought it was smaller than what it was, but I never checked.
