What happened during the two years?
Were there no buses - or did they operate from roadside stops?

Answer (from Googoo):-
Quote:
during reconstruction National Express is using a temporary site in Oxford Street on the opposite side of Digbeth High Street, called Birmingham Central Coach Station.
The new coach station, at the original Digbeth site, was due to be completed by August 2009. However after delays, primarily the collapse and liquidation of the previous contractor, it will open to passengers on Monday 14th December 2009.
