Takes me back to my days processing payroll. We used Pony Express to courier our BACS tapes down the M1 to Edgware. Highly efficient company they were too, never letting us down at all. The manager of the local branch (Coventry) was aptly named Mr Trotter. You can never forget a name like that.

An interesting read. I often wondered what happened to Red Star, we were often getting parcels at the Printing Works which had come via Red Star and it was usually my job to collect them from the Station.
Crosville used to deliver parcels too, but I didn't see them mentioned.

Red Star was great (IMO). Regular trains and you could even get collection and delivery (if you had the time to spare) or deliver yourself to the station office.
In rural regions (without trains) Red Star parcels were transferred to buses (but there were conductors in those days . . .

Crosville busses around here were driver only and parcels could be placed on at stops. The driver would usually guess the weight and charge accordingly.

That reminds me, I once was waiting for a bus to put a parcel on. I was there in plenty of time and this bus arrived, driven by a bloke who is now a friend of mine. I got on the bus (I was a spotty teenager in those days!!) and said, "Can you take this parcel to Bangor" driver said No! "Why not?" I asked indignantly "Because I'm only going to RAF Valley". I had got there soon enough and, unbeknown to me, there was a bus about two minutes before the Bangor one which did the round trip to RAF Valley. I didn't think to check the sign on the front of the bus! I bet the passengers enjoyed that one!!

Having been in the parcel delivery business most of my life, with, Hanson Haulage, Huddersfield Parcels (later to become Arrowfast), Bees Transport, United Carriers, I also remember a few more in the North of England.

Were Ripponden & District the company that had a logo that looked like a Bus Company (or even a railway station) name?

I think it was the underlining that did it . . .

That was them, distinctive Blue with cream top liverey, became part of the United Carriers group, delivered only in the Yorkshire/ Lancashire areas.

London Carrierrs became known as InterForward and were taken over by the Bibby Line Group sometime after 2000. We got some of their Mega trailers and units.
