Here are my thoughts and I'm NOT an expert -
1. First check the gear linkage. If you are very lucky you'll find that is is worn and simply not engaging the gear properly.
2. Next pull the top/side of the box and examine the selector forks. If you are quite lucky one or more will be worn thin and not engaging the gear properly
3. If it is neither of the above you are unlucky and it is due to wear in the box and it needs a rebuild.
You could just hold it in gear and I have seen a bungy cord used to keep it in gear if you need it in second for a long time. This is a temporary solution.
