Hi my name is Tommy from central Scotland,l am busy just now tidying up my 5ton wooden dropside TK.l bought it last year from ebay with a view of a full restoration(l am a commercial vehicle painter for over 30yrs) but on getting it home found at some point someone had already (some yrs earlier) done a proper job cab off etc so lve decieded that l like the slightly rough around the edges look that its showing now.Its the 4cyl diesel which now runs well with the imput from a few friends but l think it will struggle to pull my Sterling twin axle caravan which l hoped to pull to shows.l was not given any V5 so will probably be posting for some advice on the proper way to go about getting one.A check on HPI shows that it was a yellow box van maybe British Rail crew wagon or similier as the milage is low and the interior (beige) is in exceptionaly good condition for a 1979 vehicle.I look forward to hearing from you all and any painting tips l can help with just ask.

Hi Tom,
B.R. vehicles quite often had a reg. no. relevant to a rail centre. Where I live, near Leeds, most/all had a York area reg. If the reg. of yours suggest a major railway place, that might be a clue.

Welcome to Truck and Bus Forum, tom.

Sometimes a sound but not pristine vehicle is more appealing than a 'perfect' ex-works condition one (IMO).

The 220 diesel is not a fireball - it will pull your caravan, but not very quickly!

Be warned that people who tow caravans to shows with trucks incorporate a spring device to cushion the vertical movement of the ball - something to do with frame damage to the caravan by the stiff roadsprings of the truck. If you do decide to attend a show, look out for owners who have modified their hitches and get the details (most seem to be home-made).

Just checked it appears it was reg in essex

Yes, but without windows (and probably with a hatch in the headboard for poles).

British Rail had windows (well, at least, some had).
