Quote:

A three-axle trailer which is pulled by its three-axle prime mover is permitted to carry 44 tonnes, while a four-axle trailer is permitted to carry 51 tonnes.
Because sand is heavier than bulky waste, these sand trailers are also carrying about 70 tonnes to 80 tonnes, about twice their permitted weight.
Aren't there any highway checks?

Yeah. May not always be 'strictly enforced' though (if you know what I mean).
