Police in India say 45 people have been killed after a bus in which they were travelling plunged down a deep gorge.

Road accidents are common in India and claim hundreds of lives each year.So how many are killed each year in road crashes in the UK? I believe that the figure is about 3000 (and that is for a much lower population than India). The numbers for India have to be much higher than suggested.

And that is with only about 1% of the World's vehicles . . .

Edited to add:- Such accidents account for nearly 8% of the world's total fatalities.

The UN estimate annual road deaths are 1.1 million and is number one killer of young people aged 10 - 24 worldwide.
