Leicester city centre has a few sets of these bollards. I witnessed a near-miss accident a couple weeks ago at the end of Market St when a delivery van narrowly escaped being damaged. The circumstances were similar to the ones in the report mentioned in the previous post - tailgating.

Did the van get through? - or did (s)he decide not to proceed?

The driver very wisely decided not to risk going through. He must have had quick reactions because he put it in reverse and the bollards just missed taking off the front grille etc.

From the videos that I've seen you would have to be pushing the authorised vehicle - any gap and you're snookered!

Reminds me when I nearly got trapped on the Lindisfarne (tidal) causeway.
I could see a van parked at the central refuge so reasoned that this was the 'warden' waiting to close the causeway. I drove until the water reached the engine and it started to misfire. I stopped and reversed (about a quarter mile) with the engine misfiring. Had to spend four hours in the pub (!) until the tide went down. As I drove back to the mainland the van was still parked at the refuge, having been submerged up to the headlamps (it was a Transit).

Durham City. have had similar problems with bollards.official traffic going through legally.then the not so bright driver,s trying to follow them through.ooops crash.:eek:though i think at durham its a toll,through the city.

AFAIK, the Durham toll is on vehicles wanting to drive up to the Cathedral.

Durham County Council introduced the toll for drivers using 1,000-year-old Saddler Street in the city centre which stands on the peninsula above the River Wear.
This is the only public access road leading to the World Heritage Site of Durham Cathedral and Durham Castle.
It was mainly introduced to reduce traffic flow using the road.
